Local artist, actor and middle school teacher Julian McFaul offers some of the most unique creative design and construction classes in the city. Most workshops involve cardboard construction and time for creative play. Sample offerings include the creation of working cardboard rowboats to navigate Powderhorn Lake, the creation of a gigantic Minotaur-themed walk-through maze and an equally gigantic walk-through cardboard city. Three weeks are offered for the creation of an actual working cardboard castle with supplemental courses for the design of cardboard arms and armor, bicycle steeds, catapults, trebuchets and siege engines. Students learn basic wood framing techniques and develop strategies for defense in giant games of capture the flag.
