Shortly after reporting aboard your ten scouts are divided into two crews, each with one of your youth functioning as "crew leader". One of our experienced Sea Scout youth will serve as mentor/advisor to each crew and, from the moment we leave the dock at Friday Harbor, your scouts will be taught "the ropes" , both literally and figuratively. They will stand watches on a rotating basis at the helm, as lookout and at the navigation station, all the while being ready for a "all hands on deck" call to trim or change out sails as Odyssey wends her way through the beautiful San Juan Islands. Every evening will find Odyssey anchored in a new harbor, sometimes remote, sometimes at a resort that is the object of desire for the rich and famous. Being anchored means night anchor watches, which teach a certain discipline and responsibility and serve to keep all hands sleeping below and on deck safe from the surprises that the winds and tides have foisted on mariners through the ages and turned them into a prudent folk. Housekeeping is near and dear to the mariner. "A clean ship is a happy ship". The crew will roll out of their bunks in the morning to swab decks, and those assigned mess cook duties will help cookie in preparing meals and setting up and taking down the messdeck.
