Camp Yakety Yak is desiged by speech-language pathologists for children age 6-11 to develop social communication & emotional regulation skills in an inclusive day camp setting while also serving as a training site for future educational or therapeutic professionals. We partner with Portland State University's Speech & Hearing Sciences Department to offer a clinical practicum site for undergraduate and graduate students wishing to become speech-language pathologists.
Campers attend 5 classes per day in small groups that are made up of campers of different ages and skill levels. Many college volunteers serve as leaders of the group or one-to-one assistants to individual campers.
Campers with special needs attend a Camper Orientation Meeting one week prior to camp so they can tour the facility and meet the staff. This meeting allows the staff to learn more about the child, as well.Camp Yakety Yak is a unique day camp experience for children!
-- Campers participate in social-emotional skill classes (similar to private speech therapy) and practice the skills they have learned throughout all camp activities.
-- Camp Yakety Yak has a 1:1 staff-to-camper ratio! We have a wonderful group of skilled volunteers to support campers.
-- Neurotypical siblings are welcome! We offer special activities for siblings of campers with special needs.
At Camp Yakety Yak, our mission is to teach children the language of friendship.
