Welcome to the world of Colonial Maryland! Colonial Adventures offers children the opportunity to spend part of their summer experiencing colonial life in a hands-on, experience-based environment. If this sounds like just another school field trip with tours and lectures, think again. Your child will live the colonial life dressing in period clothing, hearth cooking their own lunch, learning colonial crafts (including making leather journals, writing with quill pens and more), and playing colonial games and throwing tomahawks. They will also learn to be a spy and send coded messages, and even become a pirate for a day-- acquiring a pirate name, searching for buried treasure, and terrorizing the Chesapeake Bay! Through a wide variety of hands-on and experience-based activities they won’t realize they are learning, they’ll just think they’re having fun!
Kids will be totally immersed in colonial life. To help with this, each will be given a set of colonial clothes to wear for the week. They will truly look and feel the part.
Arrrrgh! For a day, your kids will live the life of a pirate on the Chesapeake Bay! After acquiring a new pirate name they will learn to talk like a pirate, hunt for buried treasure, make a treasure map of their own and learn about what it took to be a successful pirate. There may be eye-patches, peg-legs and parrots involved. Shiver me timbers! A fun day this will be, me hearties!
Did you know that during the Revolutionary War both sides used female spies? Learn about spies and the methods they used to send secret coded messages.
For the more adventurous, there will be the option to stay overnight in one of our historic buildings. We’ll explore the site, play games, sing songs, tell stories, and sleep in a colonial style building. An additional fee will be required.
