Campers take a look at what is important in a community. They examine their own communities, the JA BizTown community, and create their ideal community in small groups. Next, campers will attend a career fair to discover the different types of businesses and industries that make a community.Campers explore jobs in JA BizTown by participating in a scavenger hunt and learn about resumes and the job application process.
Campers begin the day by with a job interview for their desired position in JA BizTown. After placement in a business of interest by the JA Camp Staff, campers engage in small group discussion and learn how to plan and run a business. Campers create a business plan with rules and responsibilities for workers in their business, a budget, their financial obligations, and identify what they need and where to find it. Campers also explore a variety of ways to advertise their businesses, using web pages, newspaper, radio, and television advertisements.
Campers focus on personal financial literacy, exploring how to manage their money using savings and checking accounts. They track their JA BizTown spending using account registers. Campers also create unique products and services available for sale to customers.
The JA BizTown businesses are open for business! Campers work in their businesses throughout the day and help customers. They have break times to deposit their hard-earned paychecks and shop in the businesses. Family and friends are invited to have lunch with the campers and shop in JA BizTown. The week ends with a closing Town Meeting and Ice Cream Social to celebrate the accomplishments.
