Miss Porter's School is pleased to announce our Summer Programs for 2009. Girls in grades 7 through 10 are invited to experience Porter's academic, artistic, athletic and residential curriculum and community through participation in the Daoyun Chinese Summer Program and Sarah Porter Leadership Institute.

Daoyun Chinese Intensive Language Program

This boarding program will immerse girls with little or no knowledge of the language to Chinese and modern Chinese culture. The academic program includes six hours of instruction daily in speaking, reading and writing Chinese. While mornings are spent in the classroom, afternoons will be filled with activities such as Chinese typing, calligraphy, dance and traditional Chinese tea time. Additionally, a variety of sports will be offered so girls are able to experience Porter's athletic facilities. Evening activities are shared with girls from Porter's other summer programs and include language practice. Classes are not held on weekends so events can be featured including a field trip to Chinatown in New York City, a meal in a Chinese restaurant, and demonstrations in Chinese cooking and tai chi. As the program progresses, girls will speak more frequently in Chinese, especially during classes and other language activities.

Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1

Porter's graduates leaders who have the vision, determination, character and capacity to shape a changing world. The Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1 strives to do the same by offering girls opportunites to learn, practice and hone the necessary skills to be a strong female leader. Each day, girls will encounter exciting challenges to facilitate their discovery of their personal leadership style. Leadership activities will focus on problem solving, quick-thinking, teamwork and trust. A panel on civic leadership teaches the value of social awareness, while incredible guest speakers, a self-defense class, community service and a visit to a ropes course provide forums for personal reflection and goal-setting. The program provides a comprehensive experience addressing all areas of leadership, including compassion, courage, confidence, and maturity.

Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 2

Girls who have attended the Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1 will gain more extensive leadership experience in Level 2. Girls will practice the communication and conflict resolution strategies learned during their participation in the Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1. The program includes an off campus two-night camping and white-water rafting trip with girls participating both as team members and leaders as they take responsibility for setting up camp, preparing meals and completing projects that require the focused work of a team. They will continue to develop their leadership skills serving the larger community through service work in the Hartford area.
