Summer Camp Descriptions

Drums and Percussion Camp Beginning (Age 6 and up):  Geared toward the student with no prior experience. Learn the basics of rhythm and percussion in a relaxed stress free environment, and have fun in the process. The goal of this week long camp is to introduce the world of percussion to kids in a fun, relaxed manner while teaching foundational rhythmic concepts that can be applied to a variety of musical situations. In the process a certain amount of music theory will be introduced as it relates to rhythm.  This will include learning note values, time signatures, and reading fundamental rhythms in time.

Drums and Percussion Camp/Intermediate to Advanced (Ages 9 & up) – This week long camp is geared toward students who have some percussion background.  The camp will concentrate on intermediate level snare drum reading, rudiments, beginning to intermediate drum set, technical development of the hands and feet, some auxiliary percussion, and the basics of musicianship as applied to marimba and vibraphone. We will try to play a percussion ensemble at the end of the week.

Drum Set and Percussion Camp/ Advanced (Ages 9 & up)  – This week long camp is primarily geared toward percussion students who want to improve their drum set playing, and are all ready somewhat experienced players. The focus will be on taking your technique, reading, and improvisation to the next level.  Topics covered will include “Grooving in Styles” such as Rock, Jazz, and Funk, and  creating drum parts, The fundamentals of learning to read and interpret drum charts in a Big Band Setting will also be covered.  The focus will be on what it takes to become a successful drum set player on the contemporary music scene.

Piano/Keyboard Kamp Beginning (age 6 and up):  Geared toward students with no prior knowledge of piano basics, this camp will get you started on fundamental understanding of making music on the keyboard.  Music theory instruction, games, listening, imitation, note-reading, and application on the piano/keyboard itself.  Opportunity to play selections in an informal recital at the end of the week.

Piano/Keyboard Kamp Beginning/Intermediate (age 9 and up):  Geared toward those with some to considerable knowledge of piano basics, this camp provides more in-depth study and the opportunity to prepare and present musical selections (both solo and ensemble) at the end of  the week.

Choral Camp for all ages (6 and up):  Geared toward students who love to sing and want to get better at it.  Primary focus is choral singing as a group, but allowing those who want to solo to shine, too!  Learn to read music better an/or sing along by ear.  Variety of musical styles will be represented in the repertoire.  Informal concert will be presented at the end of the week.

Flute Fiesta! (age 8 and up):  Geared toward any flute student who has already begun to play music on their instrument, this camp offers the opportunity to play both solo and ensemble repertoire and to gain a better understanding of music theory and improved technique.  Informal recital presented at the end of the week.

Vocal Solo & Ensemble Camp for all ages (6 and up):  Geared toward students who want to sing solo, duet, trio, quartet selections in any style(s) they choose.  Each student will work on at least one solo piece as well as an ensemble piece.  Students are welcome to bring any music they wish to work on, though music will also be available at camp.  Informal recital presented at the end of the week.

Instrumental Solo & Ensemble Camp (ages 9 and up):  Geared toward any student who has already achieved an intermediate to advanced level of playing on their instrument (woodwind, brass, string, piano, percussion).  Students will be working on repertoire for their particular instrument and will have the opportunity to present excerpts from it or the piece in its entirety at the end of the week recital.  Both solos and ensemble work is encouraged through the week.  Students may bring their own musical selections or may work on camp-provided material (prior notice of specific instrument and ability level must be given to Music Retreat in order for us to provide the appropriate repertoire for the week).

Band Camp for all ages (Intermediate to Advanced players):  Geared toward any woodwind, brass, percussion student who is a proficient music reader, this camp will allow band students to hone their sightreading and performance skills with fellow musicians.  A wide variety of musical styles will be covered, and an informal concert will take place at the end of the week.

Orchestra Camp for all ages (Intermediate to Advanced players):  Geared toward any string, woodwind, brass, percussion student who is proficient at reading music, this camp allows orchestral players to hone their sightreading and performance skills with fellow musicians.  An informal concert will take place at the end of the week.

Kinder Rock! (age 3 thru 5):  Music theory games, sing alongs, rhythm band/drumming, refreshments, playing on real pianos and keyboards, age-appropriate music videos, and more!  We’re going to rotate the students through varied activities to introduce them to music-making and music appreciation.  We’ll try to do a little concert at the end of the week!
