One Shepherd in a completely singular experience. On the surface, One Shepherd is a fantastic way to learn authentic competencies in leadership through the mastery of small unit tactics in a completely integrated military environment without any of the degrading elements I had come to associate with boot camp, or military schools. While it's a fast paced education, they are absolutely not interested in breaking you down before the martial education begins. The environment during a semester is one of encouragement, safety, and respect. Under the surface of all that, One Shepherd is a rather jocular community men and women with the shared passion of being the most effective leaders possible in their respective communities. These points and so much more are, for me, what make every One Shepherd semester a seriously valuable educational experience.
I've really enjoyed my time at 1Shepherd. The staff are friendly and professional, and clearly enjoy what they do. I've found that this is one of the few places I can find that special level of camaraderie that only comes from accomplishing difficult things as part of a team. The best part is that we get to practice what we learn right away, so the information sticks rather than simply going in one ear and out the other.
This was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I've ever done. I loved every minute of it. Once you attend, you become part of the One Shepherd community. They are like a second family.
I am a Veteran and truly miss only a few of the things I had while on active duty. The most important of these is the relationships forged while in the military. At One Shepherd, I find that much of the same comraderie that I had long ago, is present with not only the students but the cadre as well. The camp can be physically challenging. It can push many people much farther than they are used too. But the rewards are well worth it. The lessons learned and the experiences gained are far and away well worth the time and the cost. I highly recommend this teaching and training!
This in by far the best leadership course I have attended. I have had experience in team building, leadership camps, and ROTC courses, but One Shepherd's experience transcends them all. Don't be discouraged about the martial nature, One Shepherd gives each individual the adequate preparation and training to meet each challenge. It is for more than just those that are interested in a martial field, it is a camp that welcomes all walks of life. It gives each leader a different lens to look through and many of the attendees are as unique to themselves as the organization. All of these factors lend themselves to the very well structured nature of the cadre that give students a "safe place to fail." With this environment student leaders have the chance to try new methods and strategies of leading a group of unique individuals. It really gives the full spectrum of life and helps you grow as a person and a leader. I couldn't recommend it more. My job is not a martial one, but I constantly draw of my experiences in One Shepherd to help me because the lessons constantly apply to everyday life and relationships. This is a cool way to learn how to lead. Follow Me!
This is by far the best camp experience I have had. The training is excellent, the camaraderie great and it is unlike anything you will find anywhere else. I highly recommend it to all my friends and family.
One Shepherd is freakin' sweet, very knowledgeable, and entirely committed to excellence in their students. You're making a mistake if you have the chance to attend one of their semesters and don't take it.
While I am one of the original founders of One Shepherd back in the summer of 1981, I am also a graduate of this program and current member of this community. For me, One Shepherd has been an evolving adventure. First as a Warrior, then as a Leader, then as a Cadre Instructor and mentor to future generations of Warrior-Leaders.
Over the years it has been my great honor to work with incredible young men and women who have emerged as dynamic leaders in government, industry, education, religion, and the arts – both here in America and abroad globally. Indeed, our alumni spans 20 different nations today.
One Shepherd was also my personal inspiration into leadership education. This ultimately led to my scholarly pursuits, not the least of which have been my service in the US Army Infantry, several book publications, and obtaining a doctorate in education.
I am biased, of course, but I cannot recommend this program strongly enough! It is absolutely innovative education, and yet harkens back to the timeless tradition of apprenticeship when learning was still a joyful privilege.
