After three quarters of a century, Tanager Lodge remains unique among camps. It is small and personal, with a maximum of 48 girls and boys and over 20 staff members. Accessed by motorboat across beautiful Upper Chateaugay Lake in the Adirondacks, Tanager is a place where children experience the joy and deep satisfaction of being part of something greater than themselves -- an interdependent community in a pristine wilderness setting.

We offer a progressive, noncompetitive 6 week program emphasizing fun-filled skill development, lasting friendships, and an appreciation for our shared connection to the natural world. We sleep in tents, eat family style on open porches, and swim in the clear lake. In every activity, from canoeing to crafts, we encourage campers to develop personal responsibility and outdoor skills to last a lifetime.

The staff is devoted to creating a supportive, safe environment that allows campers to grow and to meet new challenges at their own pace. Whether climbing a mountain or learning to build a campfire, each child develops the self-confidence that only comes from knowing that he or she is an integral member of the group.

Tanager Lodge attracts children of varying ages and backgrounds from across the United States and often abroad. The camper return rate is consistently 85% and we have many second, third, and fourth generation campers. At Tanager, everyone quickly becomes part of the camp family.

Our goal at Tanager Lodge is to enhance young people's respect for themselves, one another, and the natural world.  The campers live in harmony with the environment while having fun and developing interests they will always enjoy.  Summers at Tanager serve as a quiet reminder of the importance of living in a sensible and sustainable manner and of preserving wild areas for future generations.
