Trek at 2,407 feet at Cheaha State Park, which houses the highest point above sea level in Alabama. Nestled at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, you can hike the day away with your kids. Miles of ATV-friendly trails provide motorized adventures for the whole family, or pack up the family for a night under the stars at one of the park's campgrounds. Alabama offers waterside opportunities too, with the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach made up of 32 miles of beautiful white beaches. Soak in the sun while the children swim in the waves, or grab your little ones and walk the coastline discovering the shells and sea creatures that wash ashore.

Discover fascinating history. Alabama offers several monuments dedicated to equality efforts by important activists, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Notable monuments include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, directly across from the historic 16th Street Baptist Church. Immerse your children in an interactive, multimedia experience at the institute and make history come alive. Visit Montgomery, where Rosa Parks made history by holding her ground and refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Children will learn the value of standing up for what they believe in at these sites steeped in American history. Let kids' imaginations ignite in a flight of fancy of life in the old, Deep South when you check out the columned antebellum houses located throughout Alabama. These houses, such as the historic Oakleigh, are often open for public tours.

Encourage your child's interest in Alabama culture. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center located in Huntsville is the world's largest space museum and the location of the U.S. Space Camp. In fact, Alabama workers built the first rocket to land humans on the moon. Kids can pretend to be an astronaut for the day at Space Camp and Aviation Challenge Camp. Treat your children to an auditory adventure when you visit exhibits dedicated to Alabama's music legends like Nat King Cole, W.C. Handy and country great Hank Williams at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Kids can get their groove on in the museum's interactive spaces or take a tour with a museum expert. Then take your children to an entertaining celebration when you visit the place where Mardi Gras started in America. During the peak of Carnival season, the downtown streets are lined with lights and sounds of marching bands and exotic colored floats during a parade.
