Job Description

Lifeguard / Camp Counselor

Description:
Camp Choconut is a Boys' residential camp for ages 9 – 15 founded in 1896. Our 88th season will be a six-week session from June 23 – August 4, 2012. A concurrent three-week session is available from June 23 – July 21, 2012. We are a wilderness camp of 55 boys on a private lake in the middle of 800+ acres, a safe place for boys to explore in a clean, natural setting under the supervision of counselors who are carefully chosen as good role models. Our program is designed to build the whole boy, establish a sense of self-awareness with one's surroundings, and develop character in a safe, secure environment - all while having fun.

We teach outdoor living skills – knife & hatchet, shelters, fire building, cooking, hiking & backpacking skills with an eye on environmental responsibility. Swimming, canoe skills, woodshop skills that include using hand tools, archery, fishing and team building work project activities are all a part of the program. There are overnight hiking and camping trips and sometimes a 3-day canoe trip for our older campers.

The daily schedule is very structured, yet provides enough free time where the boys do not feel overwhelmed with always "having to do something". The boys get up at 7:30 and we keep them busy with scheduled activities throughout the day and evening. We get to bed at 8:30 and the boys either read to themselves or the counselor appointed to the cabin for the evening reads to them. Interjected within our daily routine are "Big Games". These are camp wide games that take up about a 4-hour block either in the morning or afternoon. The boys love these games. And, of course, there is the infamous "Villa Hunt" - a three-day game of hide-and-seek within the 800+ acres available to us.

This summer we will have no more than 55 boys attend Camp Choconut. This small number is conducive to allow for individual attention; while at the same time allows the boys to feel a sense of camaraderie between all. The boys are split-up by age group and the cabin sizes range anywhere from 4 – 12 boys in each cabin. The counselor to camper ratio is 5:1 or 6:1.

We are interested in our staff’s personal growth, with the underlying attitude that everyone has something to learn. Our program encourages you to explore your interests and push your limits while working in a program that has evolved for over 110 years. We are always looking for counselors, including waterfront safety instructors, nature, wood shop and general counselors.
