Job Description

The Welfare Manager (WM) is responsible for the overall welfare of the students. The WM ensures students are safe, secure and happy while respecting other students, staff and the facilities. The WM allocates staff in rooms across the boarding houses for effective supervision of all students with particular attention to be given to individual students. The WM supervises staff in nightly duties four days a week from 22:00 to 01:00 (subject to change due to operational purposes). The WM is required to live at the center, have knowledge of the city/cities that one is working in and expected to fulfill a demanding workload. We have positions available in nine different locations across North America (near Boston, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, South Florida, Toronto and New Haven, CT). KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Ensure and deliver an excellent level of pastoral care for every student. Responsible for the pastoral care and welfare of students at all times including non-residential students. • Make sure students adjust to cultural differences and that their religious and dietary needs are met and respected with particular attention to be given to individual students. • Help set up the center prior to student arrival. Assist with accommodation planning and room allocations for groups and individual students. • Manage, train and regularly observe all welfare staff. • Carry out pre-arrival and departure checks and room inspections. • Run a weekly welfare desk to provide information to students, foreign group leaders and staff on main arrival and departure days. • Supervise nightly duties on a rota basis (four days per week) and manage other staff on duty. Ensure all buildings are locked and secure. • Make certain students are in their rooms with lights out by 23:30. • Assist and support the center management team in residential supervision duties, including meal supervision, bedtime supervision and additional welfare duties on a rota basis. • Support the Center Director (CD) with student behavior. Liaise with the center management team to report all damage and serious incidences. • Assign welfare and/or activity staff to provide support for all individual students. Ensure that students are happy, participating in lessons and activities and address any worries or concerns. • Make certain that Ardmore Language School’s Health & Safety policies are implemented and adhered to at all times as well as fire and safety procedures. Ensure regular fire drills are undertaken when necessary. • Provide orientation meetings for new students and show them to their accommodations. • Confirm that Ardmore Language School (ALS) Student ID cards have been given to all students prior to excursions. • Handle any complaints or issues relating to the accommodation and welfare of the students quickly and efficiently. • Coordinate laundry system within the residences. • Ensure room lists are accurate and checked daily. Make sure final numbers certificates are completed and returned to the US Head Office (HO). • Report maintenance issues to staff. Maintain cleanliness of the residences to the standards of the school. • Coordinate all transfers for student arrival and departures (coaches / taxis / minibus) by liaising regularly with the HO. • Support the CD in the overall management of the center. All staff should show respect for the opinions and feelings of students, foreign group leaders and colleagues no matter what their religion, race, age background, gender or sexual orientation. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE • Previous experience working in a summer camp, school or similar environment in a residential position • Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills • Ability to ‘think on feet’ and adapt quickly to change • Enjoy working with children and teenagers • Eligible to live and work in the US RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE • Previous house supervisor / welfare work experience • First Aid qualification
