Lakewood, a cozy city, nearby Los Angeles, is a place where all the sidewalks are lined with trees and shady parks abound. In fact, there are ten major parks for families to have a picnic, play sports, go swimming, or take a walk in. There are also family programs that are available throughout the year, like Patriot Day Concert, Mom & Me Knitting and Crotchet, and ice skating. Explore the ocean at Long Beach Marine Institute's Ocean Camp, which runs for nine weeks in the summer. Each week has a different ocean theme with various crafts, projects, and ocean science. The camp is open to ages 5-12 and includes field trips, kayaking, and an expedition on their research vessel! Themes vary from Squirmy, Slimy, and Spineless, where kids can see how an octopus changes color, to Shark Days, where campers will be taught that sharks don't deserve that bad reputation. For teens, there is a volunteer program and a counselor in training program, as well. These chances teach teens how to be responsible in a fun environment.

Giddy up at Lakewood Equestrian Center and let the kids ride hand-led ponies, trot ponies, and get up close and personal with the animals at the petting zoo. For $1.00, you can hand feed the goats and there's rabbits, chickens, sheep, an alpaca, cow, and horned sheep who also want to say hello. A twenty to thirty minute trail ride is offered, as well as Mommy/Daddy & Me classes. Be sure and bring your little cowboys and cowgirls to this exciting day out on the farm.

Do like the locals, grab a tent, and head to the Lakewood City Family Camp for a night out under the stars. This is the perfect opportunity for some family bonding and for the kids to make new friends. Enjoy the outdoors and take part in crafts, singing, nature walks, and making campfires. Of course, there will be marshmallows roasting and maybe even the classic s'mores. Camp guides will help set up camp and prepare meals, so the parents can relax, the kids can play, and nature can be enjoyed by all. This event is for children ages 3-11 and runs overnight. Let your kids dive into the Belmont Pool to improve their swim skills with a lesson or practice their lap swimming.
